Chapter 1

The Great Gatsby
Chapter 1 Pages 1-21

Summary- In chapter one, we are introduced to the narrator of the novel, Nick Carraway. He starts by telling us about some of the history his father and himself. He says he has just moved to West Egg and his little house it next door to the mansion owned by Mr. Gatsby. He goes to East Egg to have dinner with his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom Buchanan. At dinner Nick meets Jordan Baker and they discuss the book The Rise of the Colored Empires and later she tells him that Tom is having an affair. The chapter comes to an end with Nick arriving at his house and seeing Gatsby standing in the darkness.

Tom- "This fellow has worked out the whole thing. It's up to us, who are the dominant race, to watch out or these other races will have control of things" (13).
-So far Tom really doesn't seem to be an ideal character. He is untrustworthy, rude and unfaithful to his wife Daisy. When discussing the book with Baker he makes racist remarks because he's afraid other races are going to take over.

Quote- "Whenever you feel like criticizing any one, just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had" (1).
I really like this quote and I chose it because it was said by Nick's father to him when he was younger and it has stuck with him since. This shows how much meaning it has had in his life. Also, it lets us know that Nick grew up in a wealthy, privileged family, however his father doesn't want that to go to his head. He wants his son to understand that he was fortunate to be raised the way he was but that he should treat everyone equally and with respect.
